US newspaper circulation falls 8.7%

Newspaper circulation fell in the United States by nearly nine percent for the six months through March, as more readers opt for free online content.

The Audit Bureau of Circulations announced on Monday that the circulation of about 600 newspapers between October and March declined by 8.7 percent from the same period a year ago.

The Wall Street Journal was the only publication among the top 25 papers to increase its readership. Its circulation stood at 2.09 million.

USA TODAY has lost 13% of its readers, to 1.82 million. The Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post and the New York Times also suffered declines of up to 14 percent.

In addition to free online articles, the decline is attributed to higher subscription fees introduced to make up for falling advertisement revenues.
